The mosaic is a sequence of images of the Planetary Nebula Abell 21 taken by various telescopes operating at different wavelengths. From left to right the images are:
GALEX (UV 2-bands ) ; H-alpha (SHASSA - low res 48arcsec pixels) ; Optical (IRB: RGB) ; WISE (bands 432: RGB) ; Radio (NVSS 20cm)

The gentleman on the far right is a star of sort : this is Johannes Gutenberg (1385-1468), the inventor of the typesetting system still in use today in the printing business (newspapers, for instance).

A detailed, scheduled program will appear here in November.

In the meantime please refer to the Topics section for the essential meeting format.
This is a set of notes to edit the file -

* The list of 'tiddlers' edited which appears on the right-hand side along the main text is commented out for the purpose of posted on the net (it's of no use to anyone but the editor) ; the tiddler concerned is called SideBarTabs .

* Under 'Accommodation' : the list of hotels has to be updated .. 31/10/2013
We are entering a new era of massive datasets. These are emerging from a range of current and planned major astronomical surveys and infrastructures such as GAIA, LSST, ALMA and SKA and from the optical to radio.

These unprecedented new data streams will present serious challenges to our ability to assimilate, federate, interrogate, distill, analyse and scientifically evaluate such vast sources of astronomical data across multiple wavelengths at multiple resolutions and sensitivities.

The issues are photometric, parametric and increasingly spectroscopic in nature as new instruments and technologies come on stream on ground and space-based observatories.

How are we as individuals and as team members to exploit these riches?

This workshop is intended to provide some introductory background and context to this challenge. The workshop is scoped as a //combined series// of relevant and engaging science talks (given by international experts using specific current and topical projects that touch on these areas) paired with back-up technical lectures on the underlying technical processes, tools and science rationale given by experts, scientists and leaders in the underlying physics, processes and techniques of smart information use.
@@font-size:12pt;bgcolor(#ff0000):color(#ffffff): Deadline for registration: __10^^th^^ December 2013__@@

Registration fee

There is no registration fee for the school. Morning and afternoon tea/coffee and lunches will be provided over the 3 days of the workshop.

Registration procedure

To register for the Gutenberg School, simply send us an mailto:gawws@astro.unistra.fr indicating your name, affiliation, and whether you are an Ph.D. or Master's student.

External participants requiring financial support should also explain (in the same email) why they need support (travel, local expenses, ..) and ask their academic supervisor or director of studies to write a short letter of support, to be forwarded to us at the same email address. The financial aid will cover local expenses including pre-booked accommodation and may in //some cases// be extended to cover travel costs.

N.B. //This last request is essential as we have limited financial support for external participants: awards will be granted first to those whose academic background is deemed a closer match to the topic of the school. //

If you have questions or would like us to clarify the procedure, please do not hesitate to contact us by email or phone.

Participation Certificate

We will issue a stamped certificate acknowledging your participation to the school.

To reach Strasbourg by plane you should consider flying to the local airport in http://www.strasbourg.aeroport.fr/E/index.php, some 30 km outside Strasbourg. A taxi fare from the airport will cost 15-20 Euros.
There is a bus shuttle service to the tram station file:CTS_mini_plan.pdf; you may reach the centre of Strasbourg from there in about 20 minutes. Line E takes you directly to stops Observatoire and Universités.

Flying to http://www.euroairport.com leaves you some 100 km off target. Still, it is easy to reach Strasbourg from that airport by either taking a taxi to Mulhouse train station (15 min.) ; there are frequent trains to Strasbourg (1h). Total cost should amount to 20 + 13 = 33 Euros. Or, take a Basel city bus to Basel train station (15 min), and take a train to Strasbourg from there (1h30).

Flying to http://www.badenairpark.de is a possible option.

Note - You may consider also flying to Zurich Airport in Switzerland and travel to Strasbourg from there by //TGV// train; another option is to fly to Frankfurt Airport and take the //Lufthansa bus// to Strasbourg. Count an extra two hours travel in either case.
Several fast trains (see http:////www.sncf.com, http:///www.db.de) travel to Strasbourg. Train services are comfortable and take you right down-town.
From the Strasbourg train station, you may reach the Gutenberg School's venue by taxi (10 Euros) or by tram (line C, get off at either stop //Universités// or //Observatoire// [→ link to file:Plan_tram.pdf]).
The conference will take place at the //Observatoire astronomique// of Strasbourg, opposite the //European Doctoral College// on the boulevard de la Victoire in Strasbourg (tram line C, stop 'Observatoire').

If you plan on arriving on the Sunday, you should reach the {{EDC as this is where the welcome party will be organised. Staff will be on hand to help you get some orientation in and around Strasbourg.

The full address of the Observatoire is as follows:
